Music player

First thoughts on Music player:

I’m an unlikely convert to mp3 players as I have lot of vinyl which I still play almost every day. I would like a life where I could use one of these on my commute but sadly no.

I love not having to have a separate player/headphones and I don’t mind the compromises that go with it. It also means one less charger when I travel (2 if you count my camera battery pack).

I do, like the music player on N95 it has some nice features compared to my old phone.

  • Sound quality: The N95 sounds good on head phones and by tweaking the equaliser loud enough for commuting (and my mutton ears). The twin loudspeakers aren’t too bad, all right for listening next to a bed in a hotel room etc I may yet get a set of folding portable speakers. The ear phone buds you get with it are fine.

Switching between views i.e. “album”, “song” is easy.

  • It recognises window media player playlists. I use media player mainly because Nokia’s own music interface in its old form was rotten (it hung up all the time and was just rubbish so I stop using it).
I-tunes is rubbish as it won’t sync with my phone (I only use it to subscribe to podcasts).

The main downside to windows media player is that is doesn’t recognize (I-tunes format tunes even though my phone does) and so I have to use the larger mp3 files.

  • It’s also not so good at recognizing more obscure cd’s. I get the feeling with some my more rare Scandinavian groups I’m first person to look for details/cover art. Cover art in general is arcane ritual

One big difference is that with podcasts if a ‘cast is part played the player returns to the position on the track you left at. This is very useful as with my old phone I was always jogging the controls mid show and missing the last 10 minutes. Why you can’t simply scroll through tracks I don’t know?

It sounds good through my Hi-fi and comes with a good set AV inter-connects , which can also connect to a telly.

One nice feature is “Most played” option.
Which as of now for me are?
1. The tracks of my tears By Smokey Robinson and the miracles
2. Cologne Cerrone by Goldfrapp
3. Vulnerabilia by My Computer
4. Fill My cup by My Computer
5. Create your own psychosis by we are soldiers, we have guns

Only 94 to go!

N95 Film number one!

I shot this film yesterday on my N95, I didn't edit or upload it on my phone but I think it looks pretty good and dead easy.

I'm worried about uploading from my phone as it takes ages on my land line let alone over wap and I don't want to drop the quality to SMS quality anyway enjoy!

I edit on cyberlink power director 6 and Audacity audio suite.

Introduction

Hello,This is my new blog/project.

I’m going to see how much I can do with my new Nokia 95.

Why the dickens would you do that no one in 1970’s wrote a column about trim phones you insufferable technose?

Well in phones like N95 I think the future has finally arrive. let me explain I’ve always been a future head I think seeing the Thunderbirds movies after school day did that and the moon landing tomorrows world, the dragon 32 and getting our first soda stream. I remember seeing the much overlooked series Star Cops and the “hero’s” having a pocket device that did everything played music, controlled the telly looked stuff up fro him. Well we have finally got there.

Also I was reading Stephen Fry’s amusingly if slavishly Apple focused column the other day. And much as I admire Stephen and his writing I am slightly annoyed that he’s always banging on about technology but when it comes to expressing himself he’s surprisingly old school. He has loads of kit but as far as I know doesn’t make films etc with them. In fact apart from a podcast he uses pre-war tech, film cameras, the broad sheets, TV. Etc. I just think he should stop swooning over Apple’s latest underspecced over priced trinket and do something creative with it.

So I thought I’d put my money where mouth is and try it all myself.

So in next few weeks I will:

  • Making films on my phone (let’s say 95 just to raise the stakes) which will try to edit and upload from my phone.

  • Try to blog mobilely

  • Take loads of pics

  • Do some sound recordings (if not a podcast)

  • Set up the GPS and explore that, I mean I was looking at the satellite pictures of my brother’s house last night on my phone! That is simply out of this world incredible.

  • I’ll post up any tips etc I find out about.

  • Plus any suggestions that spring up on the way.

  • And as they always say and much more.

  • Oh and having some fun.
